Chalk, our legacy learning management tool (LMS), has served the campus well for the past 18 years in providing a framework for faculty to develop and disseminate course materials to students and engage them in discussion boards, surveys, and quizzes. However, the academic use of technology has advanced significantly, and a modern LMS is expected to support more services —and especially, more socially interactive activities— in a user-friendly environment.
As such, Chalk has reached its useful end-of-life and is actively being replaced by Canvas, an new LMS that uses contemporary tools to teach and engage with today's students, and it is quite intuitive.
Both Chalk and Canvas are being supported through the 2016-2017 academic year, but instructors are now encouraged to implement new courses in Canvas. With the summer quarter 2017 session, all new courses will be created within Canvas. Chalk will be maintained in read-only mode through the next academic year.
There is no charge to the user for this service.
